President Bush’s Speech on Illegal Immigration

I actually did listen to some of President Bush’s speech today (it was on the radio and I was driving). I have to say that the new plan to handle the borders sounds pretty good, but so do a lot of things that have never happened due to the stupidity and bureaucracy of Washington.

One of the things that really did strike me was his quote that (paraphrase) “We shouldn’t have to choose between being a welcoming nation and being a law-abiding nation.”

I totally agree with his point there. The last several years people who have spoken out against illegal immigrants and their effects have been viewed as not compassionate at best or racist at worst. Really all these people want is that immigrants follow the laws of the land just like everyone else. I understand that it’s difficult to get legal admittance to this country, but that doesn’t justify ignoring or actively flaunting the law.

I appreciate the fact that immigrants want to come to this country and I appreciate that many of them are hard-working, law-abiding citizens, and that we are all (after all) children of immigrants. However, I think it’s a shame that we excuse the behavior based on circumstances.

What do you think? How has the current policy failed and what are the best steps to take to fix the current situation?

This is a tough subject for me too… and no matter what, people throw the argument out about the ‘brave’ immigrants searching for a better life in America.
the problem is that when the idea of an open border to America was here… these immigrants (be them irish or german, etc.) paid taxes to a government that wasn’t expected to provide their every ‘benefit’. now we have a government model that resembles parts of socialism… but when you have people taking advantage of the ‘social’ aspects without contributing… it really makes it difficult.
anyway… i like the ‘geekery and life’. so far, it should be ‘techery and politics’… hahah

    Hey Dan,
I like this blog better than the other one. I can actually understand a little bit of what you’re talking about here. And yes, what a funny post you left on my blog. But, how do you remember the day I was born????
